Trainer of the Month: Malla Medford
Congratulations to Malla Medford, our Trainer of the Month for October, who conducted a fantastic, interactive and informative Makaton taster workshop.
Each month we celebrate a member of our community who has delivered an outstanding training experience for teacher trainees or professional peers, based on professionalism, workshop evaluations and feedback.
Malla, an Enrichment Teacher at Jumeirah Primary School, is a certified Makaton trainer and was keen to share her skills with fellow GEMS colleagues. Makaton uses gestured signs and symbols to support spoken language and language development. It can help people with no or unclear speech to communicate and be understood. It is estimated that more than 100,000 children and adults around the world use Makaton to communicate. The taster workshop was well attended by GEMS staff from various schools, and Malla received some great feedback from participants:
“Really informative. Great use of activities”
“I really enjoyed this session and would be very interested in further [Makaton] training.”
“The course was very interactive, fun and engaging. The group sessions kept people’s interest and helped to retain the information given.”
Earlier this year, JPS was awarded Makaton Friendly status by The Makaton Charity. JPS is currently the only school in the region to hold this status, reflecting the school’s values of inclusivity and accessibility of learning.
Well done Malla and the JPS team!
