So many aspects of the way we are learning and teaching have changed drastically in the last few weeks. Everyone is embracing a new frontier in virtual learning and social distancing that is transforming our schools and training institutions. At the TELLAL Languages Academy, we have been looking at the ways in which Arabic language teaching has been impacted. We (virtually) chatted to Lead Coach Yasser Elgendy about how to safeguard these vital resources moving forward.
Hi Yasser, thank you so much for talking to us! Can you start off by telling us a bit about where you are from and what made you want to become a teacher?
I am originally from a small village in Egypt where I first realised that limited resources should never be an obstacle to learning. I firmly believed that teachers could change the world through what they do in the classroom every single day, which is what made me want to pursue a career in education. When I moved to Dubai, I joined Winchester School as the Head of the Arabic and Islamic Department which allowed me to revolutionise my concepts, practice and professional development. Working with TELLAL now is a chance to train and prepare thousands of teachers to provide the highest standards of learning in the UAE.
What do you love most about teaching?
The answer is quite simple, change. In teaching, you see the change that is happening to your students every day in character building and academic progress. It is the same for training, you see the progress of teachers, and in both of them you feel the value of what you offer.
What do you love about the Arabic language?
What I like most about the Arabic language is its ability to adapt to the demands of different times. The Arabic language has been the bridge that crosses the foundations of civilization to all that we are experiencing, thanks to the beauty and science it contains.
What are the benefits of the TELLAL Languages Academy?
The TELLAL Languages Academy is a great addition to TELLAL Institute as it offers support with Language Pedagogy. Arabic language teachers can attend the Arabic language focused professional development to help develop and expand their Arabic language teaching skills. The TELLAL Languages Academy also offers innovative workshops like Creativity in Language Teaching and Learning. It has a range of interactive sessions such as teaching through video telling, storytelling, use of drama and others.
Tell us about the importance of Arabic language teaching and training.
The enormous development at all levels in the Arab region puts the Arabic language proficiency in the forefront in our world. Studying the Arabic language enables you to learn about a rich culture and values, which we especially need now, that is why it is one of the world’s most widespread languages.
How has your work changed in light of Covid-19?
This crisis has put teachers and doctors first, and the world has realized that there could not be a life without them. Although Covid-19 changed the face of the world not only education, it forced us all to recognise the vital importance of technology in the future of education. Day to day, our efforts to educate and mentor continue, although all of the interactions are now online. In TELLAL we continue to provide digital training so that the teachers can continue their professional development journey during this difficult time. We even have a series of technology tips specifically for language teachers.
What advice do you have for people when it comes to online learning?
One of the main things to consider is authenticity. In the virtual world there is a huge amount of information available so it is essential we can identify fact from fiction and utilise the most reliable resources.
