Makaton is a type of sign language that uses signs and symbols to match spoken words simultaneously and help people with communication difficulties. Makaton is increasingly adopted by educators to help develop and increase access to communication not just for people of determination, but for all students. As the development of gestures precedes the development of speech, the integration of signs and symbols in the classroom enhances language development for all. This session will describe the journey of one early years setting and the integration of Makaton to create a more inclusive environment and become a Makaton friendly school.
