The Department for Education in England has recently unveiled an £8.5 million programme to support early language development across local authorities. As early years teachers, we are all aware of the importance of a solid foundation in communication and language to support attainment, avoid behaviour difficulties and promote overall wellbeing, but how do we support this in our daily practice? From knowing when to talk to students and provide a running commentary, to gauging when to withdraw based on face-watching and using behavioural science. This session will explore supporting interactions including serve and return conversations, appropriate questionings techniques, importance of thinking time, the difference between receptive and expressive language and supporting the role of parents. Participants will leave the session with practical ideas that they can implement at classroom to support communication and language development.
