A child in your class during circle time…fidgeting, poking their friends, unable to sit and focus for more than 1 minute. Displaying challenging behaviour and unable to follow instructions…When children do not respond in situations as we expect, what might be the root cause? Sensory perception and integration are influencing our lives, our well-being and our personalities. Our senses allow us to connect with our environment, to perceive sensory information and to express ourselves. On the other hand, our senses help us to be aware of where we are in space and time, developing self- and body-awareness. Given recent moves towards online distant learning due to the global pandemic, and more and more children remaining at home for extended periods, sensory integration has become a hot topic of conversation and as early years teachers, we must learn new ways of strengthening children’s sensory perception. Participants will explore a wide variety of games and play ideas for strengthening children’s sensory perception.
